BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Bogusław Tober graduated from the Stanisław Wyspiański Fine Arts High School in Jarosławiec, and then from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (ASP). He studied Drawing under Prof. Stefan Damski and Prof. Marian Nowiński, Painting under Prof. Jacek Sienicki, and Sculpture under Prof. Stanisław Słonina. One of the three students awarded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, he leaves to Montescaglioso, Italy, for the International Festival of Computer Arts. While still a student, he becomes the actor of a one-man show “Life in Seven Acts,” successfully performing at the “Brama” Warsaw University gallery.
As an ASP graduate he goes for a year-long study visit to Paris. After returning to Warsaw he works as a set designer for TVP2. At the same time he creates and exhibits his work in numerous galleries in Warsaw and abroad, e.g. in Elsie Stroeting Moderne Kunst Forum noncommercial gallery promoting the most interesting phenomena in modern art.
Tober’s early work is very expressive, created in the precious matter of paper, combining various techniques, including Collage. His figurative paintings are thematically engaged in combating the destruction of the world, nature and man by contemporary technological civilization. They show a merciless mechanical extinction of original values and the degradation of nature with rampant and ruthless industry.
In this personally difficult time, he withdraws all his work from galleries and shuts himself in the studio for many years. He writes film scripts and poetry.
After a long break, in 2010 he presents 24 art pieces in the “Burzca” gallery in Zakopane. Then in 2012, in the “Dom Doktora” gallery of contemporary art in Zakopane, he presents numerous abstract paintings on canvas. In 2015 in the Zakopane Art Gallery he presents his new sculptures “Objects” at a collective exhibition “Artists creating in Zakopane.” In 2016 at the opening of a new Warsaw gallery “Galeria 2 piętro” he presents seven objects-sculptures and numerous abstract paintings. In 2016 and 2017 he organizes outdoor exhibitions of his sculptures in Zakopane.
In 2018 he takes part in a collective exhibition of Warsaw sculptors as part of the “Pasja” project at the premises of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP.) The current exhibition “Elements” March 2018 is an attempt to show the relation between seemingly abstract elements on flat canvases and sculpture-objects within the exhibition space.

WORK

“From your mind to your heart”

There is a fragment of reality, which draws our attention. It becomes more important than the context, than the whole. Unexpectedly, it surprises us in every way. The whole becomes less important than the detail. The match of colors, temperature, tension, contrast or texture. The area of balance, gravity, even beauty. It does not matter whether these are parts of matter combined by fire or a responsively designed Zen garden.

There are such fragments everywhere around us, in nature and also in industrial development. When we notice them, such fragments evoke special emotions inside us. They are special in a way.

Discovered areas “taken out” from the surrounding, noticed by the artist and transferred onto canvas.
This way the collections of such fragments were formed, which placed onto colorful “background” created the essence of the first paintings. As if “showcases” full of fragments, artefacts worth remembering. Collections of fragments, remnants of our world, our modernity. This is contemporary Archeology. Artefacts or maybe just facts, the evidence of our civilization. The remnants of beauty, which is so relative. All seemingly separated, but together on the common space of the painting. Fragments which are going to create new existence in the future.

FROM PAINTING TO SCULPTURE

How to be real ?! in showing fragments of matter including such ingredients as: smoke, part of a steel bumper, a piece of silk and the distances between them in the color of dark blue light. There appeared the need to create a material form with an attempt to catch what’s In-Between.
This is not sculpture in the classical sense. A form entirely created by the artist. A form containing only realistic form.
This is more about “Retaining” a unique pattern of colors and the matter itself. The spirituality and Energy that the pattern contains. What was in the beginning takes on a different meaning and becomes merely an inspiration. There appears a new context. The study of the surrounding world and its parts layered in a 3D space. Sometimes the form is imposed by itself and directs the creator’s hand, but at times it also requires to be created – thus derealizing. The Pure Form starts to live its own life.

This unique macro world of dreaming and staying awake enlarged to gigantic dimensions shows the magnitude and mirage of the material world that we are part of. A prescinded “Element” also becomes a search for the structure of reality. An alienated object gets revealed and shown. It becomes Astonishing. It had never existed by itself before. It was always part of a bigger whole. Forms are shut in color and matter. Prescinded fragments become individual quality themselves. They are always part of the whole and are heading for the whole. The separation is temporary. A new merger of the fragments of matter into one is only a matter of time and the future achievements of the artist.

PAINTINGS

Colors meet the form. Chosen fragments of objects and matter from the surrounding reality as future artefacts. The belief they would survive a civilization disaster. Strengthened with the creative energy of their lasting over time, they are used to build a new different reality. Presented new world being created from the beginning. Lumps of soil circling freely connected with the steel remnants of car body by a green piece of a plant, surrounded with just a piece of the sky. Enlarged artefacts form a mosaic of coexisting beings. Unreal in their new existence, they show us their mystery of Genesis. Fragments of matter have been extracted by the artist with a new form and color from a so far unknown hidden being. They combine with each other. Forms and colors clash.
